Application Tips

With the use of computers, completing an application has never been easier. Using our on-line application system, you can create and save your application for future use. Don't have a computer? Check with your local library or state employment commission - most have computers available. Visit http://jobs.agencies.virginia.gov to set up your account today!

1. Review the job posting to ensure that you understand what qualifications are required, and determine whether you have the necessary qualifications.
2. Gather all the information needed for completing the application, including your past employers, addresses, telephone numbers, dates of employment, dates of graduation, etc.
3. Transfer the information onto the state application form. Be certain to check your spelling and ensure that numbers have not been transposed.
4. It's critical that you include good contact information. If we can't contact you because you now have an unlisted telephone number or have moved, you may be losing an opportunity for your "dream" job.
5. Be certain to fully complete your education information, graduation date, and curriculum major (and minor if applicable).
6. Describe your work experience indicating specific tasks that you performed. If necessary, include an attachment. Your descriptions should be brief, to the point, and relevant to the qualifications that are expressed in the job posting.
7. Identify licenses and certifications that are relevant to the position for which you are applying. Verify within the job posting whether you are required to submit an official transcript from the university, and if so, ensure that an unopened official transcript is submitted to the HR office. An unofficial transcript may be submitted for screening purposes.
8. Provide complete contact information for your personal references including full name, address, telephone number and your relationship to the person (friend, co-worker, peer, etc.).
9. Be certain to report any convictions, including traffic violations.
10. Indicate your availability to start work and respond to any additional application questions. Please ensure that you read and understand the certification before electronically signing and submitting your application.
