Celebrate - and hire for - abilities, not disabilities

As the nation celebrates the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, people with disabilities continue to be identified by their disability, not their talents. The goal for October, Disability Employment Awareness Month, is to change that. The monthlong theme, "My disability is one part of who I am," strives to help the public understand that it's the ability that counts rather than the disability.

The Department for Aging and Rehabilitative Services' oldest service unit is the vocational rehabilitation program. Since the 1920s, the staff has forged partnerships with local, regional and national employers to supply them with clients whose training matches the workforce needs and who are ready to join the new Virginia economy and workforce.
